Chitosan

Chitosan is a non digestible amino polysaccharide fiber derived from ground or powdered shellfish like crabs and prawns. It is not absorbed into the body, but rather passes through the gastrointestinal tract.

It can help with weight loss by reducing the absorption of fats. Chitosan works by binding with dietary fats in the gastrointestinal tract and preventing the digestion and absorption of fats, and ultimately the storage of fats. Chitosan effectively lowers your energy or calory intake.

While taking chitosan, it is important to take a daily multivitamin as chitosan can affect the absorption of important nutrients, especially fat soluble vitamins. Fat soluble vitamins are vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E and vitamin K.

It is very important that people who have allergies to shellfish should avoid taking chitosan as chitosan is derived from shellfish.
