The Limitations of Body Mass Index
Although BMI is a good initial measure for weight status, it does not tell the full story. Therefore body mass index should not be used as the "be all and end all" of a person's weight status.
BMI does not give an indication of adiposity. Adiposity is the distribution of fat around the body. Excess fat around the hips and buttocks, or a "pear shaped" body can be associated with varicose veins and joint disorders. Abdominal fat or an "apple shaped" body can be associated with:
- Cardiovascular disease
- Non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (Type 2 Diabetes)
- Some cancers
Some people have a high BMI due to large muscle mass rather than excess fat.
